Glory takes the Gold!

BIG CONGRATS to our own Glory Billman who took home 1st Place in the Pro Figure Short Class World Title at the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation (WNBF) Pro World Championships in Atlantic City last weekend! We did a little Q&A with the Professional Figure Athlete, Registered Nurse, and Health and Wholeness ACSM Certified Personal Trainer to give you a glimpse into her winning experience: 1. What are your favorite (and least favorite) parts of competing? My favorite part of competing in the sport of bodybuilding is the challenge. I love to push myself to a new level and being able to mold myself physically and mentally a little differently each prep. It has taught me discipline, self-worth, and confidence. And after stepping off the stage, I feel like I can do anything I set my mind to. The most difficult thing, which is very common among competitors is finding balance in life during prep. I have managed to do so better and better each time, but it's still hard. I don't like missing out on family time and shifting my focus off of my career goals. But at the end of the day, I would say there are more positives than negatives, and I have met such wonderful individuals, inspiring people, and some of my very best friends through bodybuilding. 2. What do you attribute your success/win to? My perseverance. When I set my mind to something, I just don't stop. And I have an amazing support system of friends, coaches, and fellow athletes who have encouraged me and inspired me to do my best and never give up. 3. How did it feel to be standing on stage getting awarded 1st place? UNREAL!! I was trying to hold back tears since they were snapping photos. It is a serious head rush!!! 4. Please describe the actual competition itself... I am part of the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation (WNBF). We are a league of professional, elite, drug-free athletes from around the world. In the figure category, we are judged on strict criteria in 3 posing rounds. In a line up of 'quarter turns' the judges do side by side comparisons based on beauty, overall symmetry and physical conditioning. A figure competitor should have an "X-frame"  appearance (a small waist with nice shoulders and quad sweep), be lean and muscular, but not as hard or vascular as a bodybuilder. We also do individual stage walks and get judged on stage presence...it's very important to be able to walk in heels! When most people think of preparing for a competition, the first thing that comes to mind is strict diet and training. While this is HUGE, there are so many other things that go into it. First is mental preparation: A positive attitude and mindfulness go a long way. Without having that mental edge, show prep can be a disaster. One must also consider skincare, the right tanning product, suit choice, shoes, jewelry, and posing; These are all necessary parts of preparation to show off all of your hard work the right way on stage! Glory trains and works with clients at Health and Wholeness - a multifaceted fitness and wellness business serving Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia, featuring: Private and Semi-Private Personal Training, Circuit and Mat Pilates classes, Muscle Activation Techniques, Fitness Boot Camps, Nutrition Consultations and Food Sensitivity Testing, Acupuncture, Massage, Wellness Coaching, Infrared Sauna, Ionic Foot Soaks and more. *To read more about our wonderful trainers and staff, visit our "Meet our Team" page!*

Raising the Bar: Introducing a New Ashiatsu Massage!

Here at Health and Wholeness, we make it our mission to always be offering the latest and greatest services to give you the best holistic wellness experience you can imagine! So what's on the "menu" this month? Our newest massage technique: Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy! The root word 'ashi' means foot and 'atsu' means pressure, so together they symbolize 'foot pressure' in a technique that delivers a consistent, luxurious massage. The compression stroke elongates and broadens the muscles at the same time and stimulates the lymphatic system of the body, giving you relaxation and detox at the same time! Bars are used above the head for the massage therapist's balance and we include lubricant, which is essential for its purest application. Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy combines flowing centrifugal and centripetal force and also incorporates push, pull, pumping movements. The results relieve symptoms of chronic soft tissue damage and in some cases when we're lucky, a structural change. We were so excited about this Ashiatsu method that we went ahead and built our own bar (see picture) so that our fantastic therapist can use it especially for this unique massage - it's something you'll be challenged to find anywhere else! *November Specials: A 60 minute session for $75 or 90 minutes for $105* So what do you have to lose except getting lost in the deep sense of relaxation and healing? Go ahead and book your appointment now...while this bar is here to stay, this offer won't last long! Special ends on November 30th ...and we know you're overdue for a little pampering! Health and Wholeness is a multifaceted fitness and wellness business serving Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia, featuring: Private and Semi-Private Personal Training, Circuit and Mat Pilates classes, Muscle Activation Techniques, Fitness Boot Camps, Nutrition Consultations and Food Sensitivity Testing, Acupuncture, Massage, Wellness Coaching, Infrared Sauna, Ionic Foot Soaks and more.

Picking Produce at its Peak!

Don't wave your sad good-bye to summer just yet! While the warm weather may be waning a bit, there are plenty of ways to stay grounded to sound nutritional choices by taking advantage of Fall produce and all the good pickings this season brings! Do you want to savor the lovely tastes of summer all year-round? It's quick and easy to "put summer on ice" - all you have to do is stock up on a few essentials at your local farmers' markets. *FRUIT* Choose berries, tomatoes, peaches, plums, and nectarines. Preserve: Wash and pat dry with paper towels; Hull strawberries and cherries and quarter tomatoes; Peel and slice other fruits then toss with lemon juice to prevent browning. Next, place fruit in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze before transferring to small glass containers or zip-top bags. Use within 3-6 months, but toss once you notice them start to crystallize. *VEGGIES* Pick up green beans, peas, zucchini and spinach - avoid produce with a high water content (such as cucumbers). Preserve: First, blanch the vegetables - drop them in a pot of salted boiling water for 3-5 minutes, then plunge immediately into ice water to stop the cooking process. After they've cooled, pat them dry and spread on a baking sheet to freeze. Just like you did with the fruit, transfer to glass containers or freezer bags. Frozen veggies should also stay good for 3-6 months. *HERBS* Now is the perfect time to stock up on dill, rosemary, thyme, sage, oregano, basil, parsley and cilantro. Preserve: Separate leaves from stems, then wash and pat dry. Chop each herb, add 1 tablespoon to each block of a flexible ice cube tray, and fill with water. Once frozen, remove cubes and store in a freezer bag...the next time a recipe calls for fresh herbs (say, your favorite soup or sauce) simply add a cube to the mix. Herbs will last even longer than fruits and vegetables in your freezer - store them for up to 12 months! Want more cool ways to get in touch with Mother Nature? This upcoming weekend, check out the Mother Earth News Fair - held from September 21-23. You can learn about everything from starting a garden to beekeeping, solar food drying, pickling, and fermenting. With more than 200 workshops, 250 exhibitors and 15 keynote speakers, you don't want to miss this! Health and Wholeness is a multifaceted fitness and wellness business serving Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia featuring: Private and Semi-Private Personal Training as well as Pilates, Muscle Activation Techniques, Fitness Boot Camps, Nutrition Consultations, Acupuncture, Massage, Wellness Coaching, Infrared Sauna, Ionic Foot Soaks and more.
