TRUE Story

Dr. Familoni prescribed to me a couple medications that would help in my ailment. They were medications found in nature so I was a little skeptical about their potential effectiveness. I was extremely surprised when I realized my condition was improving.

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a holistic form of treatment that has been integrated into naturopathic medicine. Virtually all homeopathic medicines are produced from natural sources – plants, animals and minerals. The success of homeopathic treatment has been recognized in many countries around the world including France, Germany, India, Latin America, the United Kingdom, Australia, and North America. Traditional Chinese and herbal medicine are often confused with homeopathy, but in fact, they are all different systems of holistic medicine.

Why Homeopathy?

There is virtually no ailment homeopathy cannot address. Everything from stress management, to acute pain, to the common cold can be helped by homeopathy because it stimulates the body’s natural response of healing.

How was homeopathy discovered?

In the 18th century Germany chemist and physician Samuel Hahnemann MD discovered that when quinine, an effective treatment for malaria, was taken by a healthy individual, it produced symptoms similar to those found in people stricken with malaria. This was noticed with other medicines too.  Dr Hahnemann noted that:

"Substances that are specific for certain illnesses, cure or aid the body because they actually cause similar symptoms to the disease process they are being employed to treat."  This in turn stimulates the patient’s vital force to help resolve the disease. The true mechanism behind this phenomenon is as unknown today as it was then, but the process is referred to as the Principle of Similars.

In Homeopathy, the skilled practitioner uses a thorough intake to find a substance that causes similar symptoms to that of the patient’s physical or emotional symptoms. Hahnemann also noted that after treatment, many of his patients’ conditions worsened for a short period of time before improving.

The Epiphany that Led to Modern Homeopathy

Dr. Hahnemann termed the above-mentioned (short-lived, worsening) phenomenon "aggravation."  Through systematic experimentation, Hahnemann learned that this process could be avoided by diluting the medicines.  When used in a homeopathic context; that is, when the substance in high doses causes similar symptoms to that of the disease in question, the diluted medicines were surprisingly more effective than the full-strength medicines. This led Hahnemann to further experiment with dilutions until he learned that surprisingly small amounts of the active ingredient in a remedy resulted in treatments free from side effects, but also increased their effect. This phenomenon he called the Principle of Infinitesimal Dose.

The mechanism of action of homeopathy is unknown at this time. There are several models that try to explain it—the similar level of dilution of naturally occurring neurotransmitters in the brain, a single disease-causing germ in a large glass of water—but none are fully sufficient to explain why homeopathy works so well.  In short, homeopathic medicines have no relationship to the disease in question, but rather the symptoms in question.  That is part of what makes their effectiveness mysterious.

A Naturopath vs. a Homeopath

In brief, homeopaths use only the homeopathic approach, whereas Naturopaths train in several forms of diagnosis and treatment, one of which is homeopathy. Training in homeopathy varies from a several-hundred-hour correspondence course to a three-year course for which candidates need not be university graduates. In contrast, Naturopaths must complete a minimum of three years of university training prior to beginning their four-year residential medical school training in Naturopathic Medicine.

Is Homeopathy Safe for Pregnant Women, Infants, and Children?

Yes.  Because of the level of dilution in homeopathic remedies, this therapy is nontoxic and can be safely be used with pregnant women, infants, and children.  If the correct remedy is chosen, healing takes place.  If the incorrect remedy is chosen there are no side effects.

Is Homeopathy Similar to Vaccinations?

It is important to note that homeopathy is not based on the same principle as immunization, which uses substances, which cause the same disease, not similar symptoms. Immunization is based on isopathy – giving a substance known to cause the exact disease in question. Also, immunization has immunological bases to it; that is, the production of T-memory cells.

Disclaimer: As with any health measure, medical or otherwise, there can be no guarantee that acupuncture will be the "missing link" that makes pregnancy happen, pain disappear, allergies subside, or any other sought after health benefit, possible. Acupuncture is not a substitute for medical care and while it has been and remains highly effective there is no one modality that works perfectly on everyone. The suggestions listed above are based on years of experience discovering the regularity with which the acupuncture treatments have been found to make the most difference for people. Because each person is unique, not everyone will respond the same way to treatment and the longer a person has had a given health condition the longer it generally takes to see improvement. As with any health measure, to see the benefit of it, a "quick-fix" mentality will not set a person up for success. Changing one's health does not happen overnight. For this reason we obviously recommend sticking with the treatment protocol mentioned above, yet for any packages of treatments purchased we can offer a refund for any remaining treatments not used if you have tried the program and feel your treatments are not as effective as desired. Note: the refund will be minus the difference paid for a package of treatment vs. the cost of pay-as-you-go treatments.
